Abstract
The osteoma of the paranasal sinus is a relatively rare but most common disease among the benign neoplasms in the paranasal sinus. It frequently occurs in relatively young men. And the frontal sinus is known to be the most common site of
involvement and
then the ethmoid. maxillary, and sphenoid sinus in the order of frequency. The authors experienced 10 cases of osteoma of the paranasal sinuses ; frontal sinus in 3 cases, ethmoid sinus in 4 cases, and maxillary sinus in 3 cases, during the
period
of
recent 6 years. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records. X-ray films and pathological specimens of 10 patients with osteoma in the paranasal sinuses. The age range of patients was between twenties and fifties and the male to female ratio
was 7 :
3. Only two patients complained osteoma-specific symptoms such as frontal headache or exophthalmos, but the other eight cases were incidentally detected on CT films which were taken preoperatively for the operation of chronic sinusitis. One case
of
frontal sinus osteoma was managed via unilateral osteoplastic frontal sinus operation and another case of osteoma involving orbit and ethmoid sinus was operated via external ethmoidectomy approach with reconstruction of the medial orbital wall
using
remodelled middle turbinate. The other eight osteomas were removed during the endoscopic sinus operations or Caldwell-Luc's operation for the treatment of chronic sinusitis. All the patients have been doing well postoperatively without any
complications.
